Native Raid on British Territory.
MEMORANDUM.
On the 25th November Sir S. Rowe reported that on the previous day a party of the Yonnie tribe had attacked Prince Alfred or Songo Town in British Quiah*, plundered the house belonging to the Government there, murdered at least three people within British jurisdiction, and carried off several as captives. In addition they killed a number of persons, principally women, in the villages on the border, and took a great many prisoners.
Sir S. Rowe immediately took steps to endea vour, by personal negotiation, to obtain from the Yonnie chiefs the release of the prisoners and the surrender of the leaders of the marauding party. He went, at considerable personal risk, to the place (Robarry) from which the raiders had come, and had an interview with some of the chiefs. result, however, followed.

Sir S. Rowe, nevertheless, continued to make efforts for a peaceful settlement, visiting other places where he thought it likely he might be able to meet the principal chiefs.
On the 10th January, the following telegram was received from him :-
