of a permit and on such an immigrant accepting employment, and power should be taken to remove an immigrant found in contravention of the law. Exception might be made in favour of certain
classes of workers, e.§. female domestic

servants, and arrangements might be sanctioned
under which an exchange of skilled workers in
the same trade might be made between employers
in this country and outside. Courts of Summary Jurisdiction would have power to order the removal of any such immigrants who become chargeable to the Poor Rate within a specified period of their arrival in this country.
After some discussion, the Cabinet agreed
(a) That further information was
required in regard to the extent of the immigration from Ireland, and more particularly the effect which the proposals before them would have upon Northern Ireland, which, they were reminded, is an integral part of the United Kingdom. The Home Secretary and the Secretary of State for Scotland were invited to enquire further into these matters and the former was

author- ised to consult the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland confidentially on the subject:
(b) That the Secretary of State for
Dominion Affairs should press Mr Cosgrave onthe question of the repatriation of immigrants from Southern Ireland Who had become a charge on the Foor Law.
