364. A laboratory service, headed by the Pathologist to the Scheme, was established in connection with each hospital, but those attached to the tem-

·porary hospitals were naturally not on the same scale as the new Kongwa Central Training Laboratory which was occupied in March, 1949. (See Appendix VI (7).)

Staff

365. Four European technicians were employed, two of them Fellows of the Institute of Laboratory Technology.

366. There were eleven African Laboratory Assistants under training. Seven were stationed at Kongwa, one at Urambo, one at Mkwaya and two at Nachingwea.

367. The laboratory service was the largest employer in the Corporation of the more highly educated Tanganyikan.

Special Surveys

368. Special surveys were carried out, dealing with Tuberculosis and Nutrition.

Reports on these appear in Appendix VI, 6 (a), (b).

Malarial Surveys

369. Malarial surveys were carried out by the Pathologist in co-operation with the resident medical staff in Kongwa, Nachingwea, Mkwaya and at Ruo, Mtama and Nanganga.

370. A great amount of work was done, some details of which are in Appendix VI (8).
