TERMS OF GOVERNMENT MOTION
Note by the Lord President and Chancellor of
the Exchequer
We were invited at yesterday's Cabinet meeting (C. M. (49) 56th Conclusions, Minute 1) to circulate for con- sideration the draft terms of the Government motion to be tabled in both Houses next week. We suggest that it should be in the following terms:-
"This House approves the steps taken by
His Majesty's Government to alter the exchange rate of the £ sterling and calls upon the people to give their full support to all the measures set out in the communique issued at Washington by the Joint Meeting of United States, Canadian and British Ministers on September 12th, 1949, for the purpose of restoring equilibrium in the Sterling-Dollar balance of trade thereby enabling the economy of the Sterling Area to maintain its stability independent of any external aid. "
