141. The mam gypsum deposits of economic importance in this country are found in the Midlands (principally Nottinghamshire), in the S.E. of England (largely in Sussex), and in Cumberland and Westmorland. The mineral is also found in Staffordshire and Derbyshire (where it is worked now in a small way), in Somerset and the Furness district of Lancashire, and in Durham and North Yorkshire. In most occurrences it is associated with some anhydrite (para. 45).

143 Before 1939 the mineral was produced at an annual rate of about half a million tons, Nottinghamshire being the main source of supply. In the War years output showed little change but since 1946 it has risen and now (1949) approaches the million ton mark by increases in Sussex, Notting- hamshire and Westmorland. Henceforward Sussex is likely to be a premier source of supply" as the Subwealden Mine at Robertsbridge, the largest single undertaking in the country, has recently been intensively mechanised and production has been increased. There is no Scottish production. “
