No. V SECTION.
Lyemun.
As long as Sywan Redoubt is held the batteries cannot be taken in reverse from the land side; and the fire of machine-guns from the Redoubt and from a point imme- diately outside the Redoubt, with very little dead water, covers an area up to 1,500 yards from the Redoubt.
At night a patrol from Sywan Bay would discover any attempt at landing.
In the daytime a patrol should be pushed along the contour cleared towards Tytam Reservoir, to open communication with No. IV Section.
No. VI SECTION.
Kowloon.
Two of the companies at Kowloon are held in reserve; the other two companies should thus be posted:--
One company, with one Maxim gun, between No. 12 Hill and the ridge a little to its north-east; and one company, with one Maxim, on Mount Cochrane and the hilly ground to the south.
The two 9-pr. guns on Mount Cochrane, and the two on No. 12 Hill, cross fire on the whole front of the position, and strengthened as these hills are to be by entrenchments, they may, from their precipitous nature, be regarded as forts.
The Reserve, with two Maxims, should be posted on the northern slopes of Gun Club Hill, whence they command the whole of the ground between the two forts and the passage over the Rifle Range Hills.
No. 10 Hill should only be occupied by a small observation outpost, which should retire betimes on No. 12 Hill.
The guns of East and West Batteries and Stonecutters sufficiently sweep the coast-line on the flanks of the position.
If the sole attack is from the mainland more troops will be at disposal, and in that case will be occupied as a first line the hills to the north of Yaumati-Kowloon City Road.
