Establishment.

3 officers (1 Commandant, 2 medical officers).

5 officers, 107 non-commissioned officers and men, armed with the Martini-Henry carbine, and 6-7-pr. (200 lb.) R.M.L. guns.

6 officers, 72 non-commissioned officers and men, armed with Martini-Henry carbine, and the Martini-Henry Maxim.

The question of the rearmament of the Volunteers with the 303 carbine is being undertaken by the Colonial Government.

The present strength of the 7-pr. battery is 8 men over the establishment, whilst the machine-gun Sections number only 3 officers, and 61 non-commissioned officers and men; but it is known, although dispositions have not been based thereon, that in the event of war many of the British would enrol themselves in the corps. The shooting of these men is distinctly good.

Arrangements have also been made to relieve the Garrison Artillery of the heavy work of hoisting ammunition, &c., by the enrolment of coolies, who come into pay on the preparation for defence. Some selected Chinese will also at once be enrolled as scouts and messengers.
