(iii) Telephone and Signalling Communications.

13. By Telephone-

The circuits in the fortress are classified as follows :—

(a.) Military telephone exchange system, to which are connected the Fortress and Section Commanders, Officers of Staff and Departmental Officers, barracks, hospitals, forts, and infantry posts. The details of the system are shown in diagram, Chapter III (EEE).

(b.) Royal Artillery Command Lines, which include

(1.) Direct telephone circuits from the Fire Commander to his subordinates,

and so on through the chain of command.

(2.) Lines for P.F. working range and other dials.

(c.) R.E. Command Lines consist of lines from E.L. directing stations to E.L. emplacements, engine rooms, &c.

(d.) Alarm Circuits, for alarming the look-out posts and night firing batteries. (e.) Messages can also be transmitted to the Civil Exchange system from the Central Military Exchange.

14. In all sections beyond the fixed telephone posts in the lines of defence, further communication is obtained by visual signalling.

There is a reserve consisting of subordinates in the Colonial Civil Departments, a list of whom is kept up for this purpose, who may possibly replace a proportion of

soldiers.
