(E.)-Action by C.R.E.

1. He will obtain instructions from the G.O.C. as to laying out the minefields.

2. He will allot money, and make the necessary financial arrangements with the Paymaster for the special works to be constructed on mobilization.

3. He will detail the duties to be performed by the Staff Officer R.E., the Loan Officer, the O.C. submarine mining, and the D.O. telephones.

(1.)-Action by Staff Officer, R.E.

1. Before mobilization. He will prepare and keep corrected up to date working plans of all the field works, roads, &c., to be constructed, with lists of tools and working parties required for each.

2. He will detail the officers, n.c.os. and men to Sections for works services and will see that the officers are in possession of copies of the above plans.

3. On mobilization. He will issue the necessary orders for the officers and men permanently detailed to join their Sections without delay.

4. He will ascertain from the C.R.E. what services are to be suspended. He will at once arrange, with the assistance of the Civil Staff, for the special works which are to be constructed

under contract.

Note.-Works to be constructed by military labour will be commenced under the orders of the Section Commanders as soon as troops arrive in the Sections.

5. He will arrange as soon as possible for the construction of mat-sheds to replace all tents throughout the Command.

6. He will be in military charge of the R.E. Barracks, and of all details of n.c.os. or men not distributed to Sections.

7. After mobilization. He will, with the assistance of the Civil Staff, arrange for the continuance of the ordinary barrack and ordnance services as far as funds are allotted by the C.R.E.

8. He will arrange for the provision of the coolies required in Table E. (i).

(2.)-Action by Loan Officer.

1. He will ascertain from the C.R.E. what works should be pushed on and make the necessary arrangements for their completion and for the suspension of the remainder.

(i.)-Works.

4. The detail of Field Works is shown in Table E (i).

Epaulements for the guns of the movable armament and entrenchments for the infantry will be constructed by the Sectional troops, who will also improve the old and open the new communications required in each Section, supplemented by contract labour.

The tools will be issued from the Ordnance Stores with the section camp equipment; they will be stacked by the guard-tent in charge of the guard until a mat-shed is provided for them.

When the works are completed, all tools which the Section Commander deem it unnecessary to retain will be returned to Ordnance Store.

The howitzer batteries not already prepared will be constructed by hired contract labour so far as available.

5. Tents being very conspicuous and in many seasons unsuitable, will be replaced by mat-sheds as soon as they can be constructed.
