You requested the official Seal of this Colony to be attached to the document in question.

Now you were in the Colonial Service when I was at School, and, at this moment, if not actually, for all practical purposes as high a position in it as any Colonial Governor, and therefore you must know as well or better than I can do the meaning of your formal applications to the Colonial Secretary upon them. Your letter was duly registered and officially minuted before being sent to me. It is, with the minutes of various members of my Council upon it, an official record of this Government.

I have not been informed what you have decided in the matter, but it has accidentally reached me that you are about leaving the Colony tomorrow, and therefore I venture to ask you to leave a word with the Colonial Secretary saying that you do not wish to press for official recognition of a document which is purely personal, or otherwise, as you must know very well, the refusal to comply with your official request must be communicated with my report to Lord Knutsford.
