affecting my own conduct might

be inquired into by the Executive Council independently of

Mr. Johnson's action in the matter.

For I unhesitatingly affirm and am prepared to prove it to

the satisfaction of the Executive Council,

that

a. that in the communication which I did make to Mr. Johnson regarding Mr. Hayllar, I was acting not

with any bad animus against Mr. Hayllar, that I was not

impelled by any motive of self-interest, but under repeated

and urgent instructions of His Excellency the Governor, that

I was acting in good faith believing all to be true and necessary

to be told in defence of His Excellency the Governor's interests, that I invented nothing but repeated what I understood the Governor to have told me and what I knew him to have told to others, that I said all I could say, without volunteering any comment, but in reply to questions pressed upon me, and

b. that, in writing my letter of 5th November to Mr. Johnson,

in entering into communication with Mr. Hayllar regarding the withdrawal of the case Hayllar v. Estel and in making the
