offered the fullest opportunity of dealing before the Executive Council with the charges he made against you and where you could have answered his charges, but that he has thought fit not to accept that offer, but that he has thought it fit to send the case now to the Secretary of State.

I am further directed by the Governor to transmit to you for such observations as you may think fit to make upon it, the duplicate of the letter (with the enclosures) addressed by Mr. Johnson to the Secretary of State respecting what he calls injurious accusations made to him by you against a gentleman of social position in the Colony during the Governor's temporary absence, and respecting certain alleged admissions on the subject connected with the withdrawal of the action of Cayliar v. Eitel, and Mr. Johnson's opinion of the effect of this upon your official status.
