being

a

copy of a letter from

Dr Eitel dated 19th July 1881

that

he wrote

to

me when

I was at Chountain Lodge, from which Your Lordship will see

that I was much more reticent

with him about

any

relations

with Mr Stayllar than he (Dr Eitel)

now asserts.

Though it was

in April that the affair occurred

in connection with the insult

to a member of my family, yet Dr Eitel first heard

of

it

only

in July, and then not from

me.

The other document,

a copy of the authoritative

statement I read to Mr Johnson

on the 25th of October 1887, the

only occasion when I spoke

to him on

this subject. It

will show Your Lordship how

improper it is for Mr Johnson

to press for an

Enquiry.

I will only add

that whilst

a

question of

this kind is quite in its proper place

before either

the Legislative

or Executive

Council, I am ready

to give Your Lordship the fullest

explanations.
