Governor had never told me anything else before that time. What I meant was what I told Mr. Johnson at our interview that according to the Governor's last instructions the book was simply a book containing decidedly indecent pictures, and could not be specified as the Secret Museum book, though I admitted, in reply to questions put by Mr. Johnson, that the book had previously been described by the Governor as part of the Catalogue of the Secret Museum at Naples.
39. When it was found, on the 21st November, that the promise given by Mr. Drummond to take the case out of Court was not carried out, although the Governor had signed the stipulated papers and accepted my resignation, negotiations followed between the Counsels engaged in the case, but failed because the Governor would not accept the terms of the compromise then proposed. The effect, however, of the papers which His Excellency had signed and given to Mr. Low was this: that, whilst up to that time the Governor's instructions to me were that I should plead justification if the case came into Court, this plea of justification became impossible in consequence of the retractations contained in the papers which His Excellency had signed.
