handwriting and asked me to make copies which I should keep for my own information. These documents contained detailed statements referring to Mr. Raylar's conduct on several occasions, and the Governor told me that this was the version which he had now agreed upon with Mr. Low. It differed in some respects from the version the Governor had given me previous to his leaving for Tsingtao, indicated that Mr. Kayllar had been excluded from Government House not, or not entirely, for bringing an indecent book to the House, but principally for some other reason.
20. Having observed that continuing my duties as Private Secretary was disliked by others besides Mr. Low, I wrote to the Governor on 4th November urging him as strongly as I could to accept my resignation and to relieve me of my duties as Private Secretary. But again the Governor declined to accept my resignation, and asked me not to do anything hastily. I therefore continued my duties as Private Secretary though I had told His Excellency in my letter that it was repugnant to my own feelings.
