any step in the
matter without his knowledge and
approval. I promised to do so and kept my promise until the case was taken out of Court.
17. Owing, however, to the attitude I observed on the part of the Governor's family, I tendered
to His Excellency my resignation as Private Secretary on the day
of the Governor's return. His Excellency firmly declined accepting
my resignation, saying that there
was no reason whatever for my
tendering
it at all.
The only

occasion when
the Governor expressed disapproval
of what I had done in his absence was when I told him that Mr. Ng, Member of Council, wrote to
Mr. Ng Choy
shortly after the taking out of
the writ and asked me to let him see the documents in the case, but I replied that I thought it better
under the circumstances to do no
more in the matter until the
Governor returned. His Excellency thereupon told me that I ought
to have continued
carrying out instructions and that I
ought to have told Mr. Ng Choy
all the details of the case.
