which by that time consisted of four documents, vry. Hagtter and two letters of Mr. Hayllar and two covering dispatches, and the Governor took on this occasion another set of these papers and placed it in my hands with the request to show it to Members of Council and especially to Mr. Johnson and to explain to them the details of the circumstances.
The Governor's version of these, however, had meanwhile undergone an alteration, as will be mentioned further on, by omitting the word "secret" in the description of the Museum Catalogue and by leaving it doubtful as to what Catalogue or book it was that was brought to the House by Mr. Ryallar.
13. Immediately after the Governor's departure, Mr. Ryrie came to the office at Government House and told me that the Governor had requested him on board the steamer before leaving to apply to me for the two documents in Mr. Hayllar's case which he (Mr. Ryrie) had not seen yet. Mr. Ryrie read the documents and returned them to me on the spot after perusing them.
14. When Mr. Johnson's letter of the 19th September reached me, I showed it immediately to Major Palmer.
