opportunity as it was necessary for his interests that the true version of the case should be known.

J. Excellency has sent me on one occasion to Mr. Russell with an official message, after the delivery of which I gave to Mr. Russell, by direction of the Governor, what His Excellency had then given me as the true version, as stated above.

10. In another occasion the Governor specially sent for me, put Mr. Hayllar's letter to the Secretary of State and the covering dispatch into my hands, and directed me to go immediately to Colonel Hall, then Member of Executive Council, to show him the documents and to explain to him the circumstances. I was also ordered to request Colonel Hall, in the name of the Governor, to repeat the substance of the matter to General Mitchell, then staying in Mr. Hayllar's house.

11. Only Mr. Ryrie, Member of Executive Council, asked me about the matter, and when he did so, I showed him the two documents and referred him to the Governor for details.
