A subsequent letter written by Mr. Haylan to the Secretary of State unconditionally withdrawing his first letter. I read them through and said to him that these documents related to great matters in which I had no concern excepting so far as the words in the Governor's despatch to the Secretary of State which accused Mr. Haylan of a disgraceful insult to a lady. I referred to these words and to the explanation which it was said to have been furnished regarding them outside that I referred in my letter of the 19th September, and that I wished to know if that explanation was true. I heard it stated on Dr. Eitel's authority that this disgraceful offence consisted in Mr. Haylan's having exhibited indecent prints in Lady Hennessy's boudoir. Dr. Eitel said "What I said was true, and he had authority from the Governor to make the fullest statement." He said "the Governor was in the habit of going out with Mr. Haylan in a steam launch; that on several occasions when these engagements had been made, Mr. Haylan had sent excuses at the last moment and in consequence of that or of some other circumstances the Governor's suspicions were aroused, and on the last occasion of these engagements the Governor left Government House apparently to go to the steam launch, but instead proceeded... and returned
