Ar Haylor? damaging to the social position of a gentleman in this Colony, and that such statements, by Dr Eikl's own admission, came from him under pressure of an action for slander, were untrue and wholly without foundation.
The injurious accusation, to which I refer, was made during the temporary absence from the Colony of His Excellency the Governor, who returned to Hongkong on the 24th October. On the day following his arrival, His Excellency communicated to me a statement, the particulars of which will be found among the papers I enclose, in connexion with this case, and this statement, which contained a contradiction of a material portion of Dr Leikl's allegations, was conveyed as directly as possible to the proper quarter.
