which the agent of Messrs Pardine Matheson sent Your Lordship a letter of complaint against me was also in connection with some unauthorized observations made by Dr. Eitel. The details are given in Mr. Keswick's letter enclosed in my despatch No. 111 of 16th June last. Mr. Johnson was present on that occasion with Mr. Keswick and he could hardly have failed to notice that Dr. Eitel's somewhat garrulous disposition had allowed him to employ most serious language in defiance of my authority and without my instructions, as Dr. Eitel at once admitted. Johnson would have shown more discretion and good taste if he had avoided entering into a long conversation with Dr. Eitel, behind my back, on a delicate subject connected with my domestic affairs.

My Lord,
Your Lordship's Most Obedient Humble Servant,
