further details he should simply refer them to me. He seems to have remembered this in the case of Mr Ripsie, for in paragraph 11 of his letter of the 27th of December he says:-
Only one member of Council, Mr Kyrie asked me about the matter, and when he did so, I showed him the two documents, and referred him to the Governor for details.
That Mr. Johnson should, during my temporary absence from the Colony, have managed to draw Dr. Eitel into a conversation and induce him to use language heard me use and which he was not authorized by my instructions was unfortunate, but for having so yielded to Mr. Johnson's questions I think Dr. Eitel was sufficiently punished by the loss of the Private Secretaryship; and considering the sort of pressure put upon him to make the various contradictory statements he has made, and that such statements refer to my private affairs and not to his duties as Inspector or Translator, I cannot agree with Mr Johnson that he should lose those appointments also, the duties of which he discharges eminently satisfactory.
