After mentioning that he was to let Colonel Hall read the documents as a member of my Executive Council, he was ordered to request Colonel Hall in my name to repeat the substance of the affair to General Mitchell then staying at Mr. Hayllar's house. Colonel Hall on reading this passage of Dr. Eitel's letter of the 27th of December, reminded me - that he had fortunately come to see me at once after Dr. Eitel had spoken to him, and that he found I entirely differed with Dr. Eitel and wished that not a word should be spoken to General Mitchell on the subject. But Dr. Eitel was ... spoken to General Mitchell on the subject. General Mitchell had simply been invited to dine with Mr. Hayllar, and he was staying at the Hotel and not at Mr. Hayllar's house. Colonel Hall complied with my wish which was in entire accord with his opinion; and General Mitchell, as far as I am aware, left the Colony without hearing a word on the subject.
