which took place at Government House by Dr Eitel, he showed certain documents and made certain statements as by your distinction and authority, to Mr Johnson which reflected upon the character of Mr Hayllar. Mr Johnson repeated those statements to Mr Hayllar, who thereupon brought an action for slander against Dr Eitel, claiming $25,000 damages.

In a letter to Mr Johnson dated the 5th of November Dr Eitel challenged the accuracy of Mr Johnson's account, as set forth in the legal proceedings, of what had passed between them at the interview. That letter was followed by another to Mr Hayllar dated the 28th.
