absolutely clear from the affinal correspondence whether Mr Hayllar's alleged misconduct on this occasion was that which formed the subject of Dr Eitel's communication to Mr Johnson
7. In a despatch dated the 10th of September last, Sir D. P. Hennessy forwarded a letter from Mr Hayllar to Lord Kimberley of the 8th of September, in which he asked permission to withdraw his letter of the 27th of July, stating that he had written it under the influence of a scandalous and untrue version of the affair which had reached him, "that he had found reason to believe that to a great extent he must have been misinformed, but that the misconception could not be traced to the act of any other person than himself."
This is rather enigmatical, but it was before the commencement of the Eitel-Johnson affair.
8. Sir J. P. Hennessy also notified Mr Hayllar's request in a telegram of the same date as the despatch. That request was acceded to in a despatch from Lord Kimberley dated the 21st of September.
In a telegram dated the 25th of November, Sir J. P. Hennessy applied for authority to cancel the whole arrangement regarding the compromise correspondence, which was granted.
