At the widow of a colonial officer in very poor circumstances I venture to offer my humble kind regards to look into my case, and to plant me whatever relief you may be pleased to afford me.

The late Mr. George Barker Pether was my husband. He died on the 21st inst. as you are aware. Kind regards have notably been informal.

"I am left almost unprovided for with five children, the youngest of whom is five years old.

My only anxiety is to secure the means to provide for the main expenses of his education which still have to be incurred.

Shortly after our settling in Hong Kong in a house of our own an unfortunate fire broke out by which we lost everything we possessed.
