Jetz Oxfordty He was introduced to me by the Rev. Professor Sayer of that college, in a note herewith enclosed, which is itself a strong recommendation of him. Along with that note is one from W. Might, which I received shortly after. I have subsequently had inquiries made concerning him. The information which he has thrown on matters is very favourable.
Mr Wright, you will perceive, is 28 years of age whereas the late Dr. Stewart advises that his age should not be over 25. Considering, however, Mr Wright's aptitude for the study of languages, I do not consider the additional three years a serious objection to his appointment. He has given me assurances of character and experience, which would be very valuable in the present circumstances of the Central School, unless my judgment is greatly at fault. Mr Might is a strong and capable man who would bring to his duties well-considered plans that he would carry out successfully.
You will observe that Mr Might took orders in the Church of England, and afterwards withdrew from clerical duties. This fact struck me the more, as I had known him as a Missionary in Hong Kong, and he was entirely "Orthodox." I wish that Mr Might had continued to be so on various grounds, but do not think that heterodoxy should come into consideration in the appointment of the Head of a secular school in this country. I believe that Mr Might has tried to act conscientiously, as he believed, in his changes of opinion and their practical results. Mr Might told me that he held his views now to himself, and did not wish to offend anyone. I talked on this matter with ... as far as the Central School is concerned.
I would only say further about Mr Might that, having acted as the Principal of Lincoln College, if he could suggest another suitable man for the vacant post, he sent me word that the only man he could think of was a Mr Might, without knowing that I was already in communication with Mr Wright.
On the whole, I venture to submit to the Panel of Nominees that Mr Wright is a suitable man for the post, and that his appointment would probably lead to a greatly increased average of ...
The only other name which I have to bring before you is that of Mr Mary C. Ridges, B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. I send it at his urgent request, with his Testimonials which are voluminous. I know Mr Ridges. He was for about four years at Canton, and in other parts of the provinces named, as a missionary.
