the effect that Irishmen rather than Scotchmen should be selected, and that recruits might be obtained from The Royal Irish Constabulary.

Acting on this suggestion when making the last selection of recruits, we wrote to the Inspector General, Royal Irish Constabulary; and were informed by him that "he was so pressed for men for the requirements of the country that he was unwilling to promote any arrangements which would deprive him of the services of any of the efficient members of The Force."

It is hardly probable that if a similar application were renewed at the present time it would meet with success, and we have thought it better to suggest that the plan of asking for recruits from this source should be abandoned, but that, for Wong Chung, we should give the preference to recruits who may offer from the Irish Police forces.
