over to the temporary charge of the Consul at Hang Chow. A report of the circumstances was

sent to the Governor, with a request that Fah-mei-ham and the other prisoners should be forwarded to the Magistrate for trial.

On the receipt of the foregoing, the Governor wrote repeatedly to Mr. Howlett, the then British Consul, requesting him to acquaint the Governor of Hong Kong to deliver up the criminals in question. Lieutenant St. John Ting-tai was at the same time formally instructed to proceed to Hong Kong and bring back the prisoners.

Subsequently, a dispatch was received from Consul Howlett stating that His Excellency the Governor of Hong Kong had communicated with the British Minister Sir Thomas Wade regarding this case and had received a report from Lieutenant St. John, which was forwarded through Frang, the Governor's Military Adjutant, to the same effect. The Governor then referred the matter for consideration of "Young Si Gamin." All the foregoing facts will be found recorded.
