Officials for the most part look upon advice gratefully as proceeding from interested motives, Dr. Eitel has wisely offered to take the official to both schools and let him judge for himself which he would wish the students to attend.

It is interesting to observe by the steps which they have now taken and by their frequent visits to this Colony for trade and other purposes the importance which the Annamese Officials attach to friendship and intercourse with the British, and I am of opinion from frequent conversation with Annamese Officials that were it not for the oversuspiciousness of their nature, their Government would long ago have sought the protection of Great Britain for their Kingdom and I believe would even do so now were they not restrained by influences in another direction.
