SIR,--With reference to the payment by the Colonial Government of one half the cost of erecting and that he will call on me to associate myself with him in the preparation of the estimates.

SIR,--I have the honour, by direction of the Governor, to enclose, for the information of His Excellency the Major General, a copy of a letter dated 1st March, 1880, from the Surveyor General, together with a copy of His Excellency's Minute thereon (3rd March, 1880) respecting the erection and maintaining gas lamps along the Military Roads in the Cantonments, I beg to inform you that matter (vide C. S. O. No. 1717 of 1877), I would be obliged by some intimation of His Excellency the Major General's views respecting the proposal.
2. As two years and eight months have elapsed since the Governor penned his last minute in Excellency from the Secretary of the Gas Company on the subject, he would be glad to learn His Excellency's wishes before I proceed to respond to Major PAPILLON'S call.

MINUTE BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR.
ASSISTANT MILITARY SECRETARY TO ACTING COLONIAL SECRETARY.
HONGKONG, 25th November, 1880. No. 4764.
SIR,--In reply to your letter No. 1623 of the 23rd instant, I have the honour, by direction of the Major-General Commanding, to state for the information of His Excellency the Governor, that the question of paying one moiety of the cost of maintaining gas lamps instead of oil lamps at certain lighting with gas the Military Roads in the Cantonment, on the understood condition that the Colony I told His Excellency Major General Sir FRANCIS COLBORNE that I would most favourably consider. Surveyor General of the War Department has approved of the erection of lamp posts, and of the excessive, I would be prepared to recommend Sir MICHAEL HICKS-BEACH to allow me to propose a vote the Roads that are used by the Public throughout the year with the exception of one day on which If the expense should not I had kindly offered to pay one-half the cost of supply, erection and lighting of those lamps situated on gateways and public roads where the Cantonments adjoin our streets. for it in Legislative Council.

the Road running through War Department property has to be stopped.
I forward a letter and plan lately received from the Manager of the Gas Company, and beg to state that the 15 lamps which the Colonial Government would be asked to pay a share are those numbered on that plan-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 16.

The total supply of Lamp posts, 5 } Do. do. of Lanterns, 8 5 Cost of fixing complete by Gas Company, 3 45 0 0 One-half cost, £94 10 0 ..£47 5 0 Total, 41The cost of lighting is estimated by the Gas Company at $3 per Lamp per month, or a total of $540 per annum, the half cost amounting to $270.
I beg you will kindly return the plan and letter of the Gas Company.

SIR,--I have received an intimation from the Military Authorities that the exterior lighting of the Cantonment with gas has been approved by the War Office.
There are to be 21 lamps, and I am informed that the Colonial Government has agreed to pay half the cost of lighting 15 of this number. Will you kindly inform me if this is the case, and if so favour me with a confirmation of the arrangement.
