In reply to the question has Mr Lockhart attained a considerable mastery of the Chinese language, we have to state that, considering the time Mr Lockhart has as yet devoted to Chinese studies (6 years!), we consider he has attained a considerable mastery of the written Chinese language.
In reply to the second question, whether Mr. Lockhart understands and makes himself understood in various conversations, we have to state that in the most ordinary topics of conversation he understands and can make himself understood in the Canton city dialect.
