Surveyor General speaks very highly of the man who was about to leave the service as he could easily find remunerative employment elsewhere, but after 17 years in the employ of the Government, it was thought advisable to increase his salary by ten dollars a month and retain his services. I notice that in previous estimates this officer's salary was $600.
An addition of $100 has been made by the Council to the salary of the Superintendent of the Government Gardens and Plantations. When the scheme of extensive afforestation of the island was first started some years ago, the services of a Frenchman named Cerneau were obtained to supervise the planting thereof. An allowance of $50 a month was made to Mr. Cerneau out of the rate for three years. But when Mr. Cerneau resigned at the end of 1879, this work devolved upon Mr. Lard and he applied for and obtained the allowance.
