With regard to the new department of Government Marine Surveyor, I approve of the expenditure of $4000 upon the purchase of a steam-launch. It is mentioned in Mr. Tonnochy's despatch, par. 13.
Mr. Brown is not satisfied with his present pay, and it is suggested that he should receive a slight increase, but I am not prepared to consider the creation of an addition to his pay until he has been a longer time in the service.
