I have endeavoured to act in accordance with my convictions.

8. Should your Lordship deem it desirable that I should honestly uphold any charges, I would ask that my official conduct might be investigated by an independent board of enquiry before which His Excellency the Governor could formulate such specific charges of official neglect or impropriety as he may be in possession of evidence to support.

9. If, however, your Lordship under all the circumstances thinks such an enquiry unnecessary, I earnestly trust your Lordship will direct His Excellency to withdraw, cancel, and apologise for his letter.

10. Your Lordship cannot fail to see that while such a document remains on record, it must render my official position intolerable. I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient servant,
Colonial Surgeon.
