scheme would be $7,600 in excess of the salaries I formerly assigned to the staff proposed by the Michael Hicks Beach; but I have to inform Your Lordship that, under this new arrangement, all fees whatsoever connected with the various offices will be paid into the Treasury to the general Revenue of the Colony, and, although I am not in a position at present to state the exact amount of those fees, I can say with confidence that they will not be less than from $2,000 to $3,000 per annum.
It will not have escaped Your Lordship's notice that I have increased the salaries of the Deputy Registrars from £2,160 to £3,360 each; that is, from £150 to £400 per annum. This has been recommended to me on several grounds. First, the emoluments now enjoyed by Mr Sangster as Clerk of Court, Sheriff, and Deputy Registrar, amount to £650, and this sum could not well be diminished without compensation. In the second place, if appointed Deputy Registrar, Sheriff and Appraiser, as I have recommended, his duties and responsibilities will be increased in connection with the levying of distresses. Thirdly, a substantial salary is necessary to secure the services of a competent accountant, who could not, I fear, be obtained at the salary of £2160, as originally proposed.
