"The duties of the Sheriff are partly defined in Section 8 of Ordinance 1 of 1873, but he has (Section 18); and performs other similar duties. He sits on writs of Enquiry to assess damages with a Jury. Bail bonds in civil causes are executed before him.

"He cites the next of kin in cases of Intestacy. He has many duties to perform besides executing the processes of the Supreme Court. He has to prepare "the Jury Lists, (Ordinance 11 of 1864); form the panel; and, in conjunction with the Registrar, perform several other duties particularly described in that Ordinance. The Sheriff serves a copy of the Information and notice of trial in criminal trials upon the accused (See: sub-pœnas of Ordinance 3 of 1875); serves writs of Enquiry to assess damages. In cases of Intestacy, he cites the next of kin.

In criminal trials for capital cases, when sentence of death is recorded, before the Governor issuing a warrant for execution of the sentence, the prisoner passes under the orders of the Sheriff, if he has not the actual custody of him. The Sheriff has to provide an executioner, and is responsible for the proper execution of the sentence." "The Sheriff is personally liable in damages for any neglect or default to any person damnified.
