Interpreter I have appointed, provisionally and subject to Your Lordship's approval, Mr. Li Hongmi, at present Acting second Clerk at the Magistracy. One of the most urgent wants of the Supreme Court is an Interpreter for the Swatow and Amoy dialects. Mr. Li Hongmi is a competent interpreter in these two dialects; and his knowledge of English and of Chinese will enable him to translate all the ordinary routine documents connected with the business of the Court. I propose that his salary should be $1800 a year.

To complete the interpretorial staff of the Court an Interpreter of Hindostani and Bengali is urgently required. I have accordingly restored that office, which has been vacant since 1873. The salary formerly attached to it was $300 per annum, and I do not propose increasing it, as Mr McBean, whom I have appointed provisionally and subject to Your Lordship's approval, holds the post of Bailiff and Assistant Usher, for which he receives a salary of $400 a year, besides fees, which amount on average to about $60 a month. This would make his total emoluments equal to $1020 per annum.
