Interpreter (China) that post should be filled up)
in its various jurisdictions
this Court dealing
with property to the value
of
about one...
thousand dollars annually is wholly inadequate.
If I shall be permitted to go further and express my opinion as to what is a
proper salary to give, a gentleman of the education, and acquirements of Mr. Ball, I should say that it ought to be $500 a
year at least, rising every 5 years by increment of $100 to $700.
It is intended to create an
Interpreterial
department, the head of it, who should be responsible for providing translation of documents for every other department as well as Interpretation should exercise a higher salary - from $900 to $1000 a year.
Surely in a prosperous Colony
where so much depends upon accuracy and fidelity of interpretation and translation
it is not too much to ask to be placed on a proper footing.
The deep anxiety I have always felt to see the Interpreters of this Court, - proper and fit men placed on a proper footing will I hope, be a sufficient excuse for troubling Your Excellency with this letter.
I have the honour to be,
(56) Francis Snowden
Acting Chief Police.
