Engaging a foreigner as property & remunerated, able to maintain a fair position, and associating with educated people is much less likely to be accessible to improper influences than a foreigner surrounded by poor relations, and undesirable connections. As to the Assistant Interpretership, his office was only created about two years ago when Mr. Rozario began to fail, and help was absolutely necessary - and all the duties of an Assistant Interpreter have been performed gratuitously by Mr. Chan Sai Thoong - the Chinese Clerk and Translator who receives the small salary of £170 a year.

It is absolutely impossible to dispense with a second Interpreter as I have often pointed out.

When the Court is sitting in both jurisdictions at the same time, as constantly happens - a Judge is sitting in Court and the Registrar in Chambers - the services of an Interpreter are often wanted by the latter for assistance in Probate cases, &c.

All these duties Mr. Chan Sai Thoong has performed without any remuneration beyond his salary as Translator, and he gave up the post of Interpreter to the Coroner at $20 a month, because he found that his duties as such interfered with his work of translating and interpreting in the Summary Jurisdiction.

Salary paid to Mr. Ball when he was Assistant Interpreter was £375 a year.
