Enclosed under this cover was a lengthy and elaborate, to all appearance studied, invective against myself, delivered without notice to me, and for which I was completely unprepared. It not only accused me of acts of personal hostility to His Excellency, of which I was wholly innocent, and which I disclaimed in my reply, but charged me with the suppression of documents, which ought to have been made public, and laid upon me imputations of insincerity calculated to raise injurious prejudice to my disfavour in the public mind, at all events amongst that portion of the Colonial community to whom the real facts of the case were unknown.
