I am to comply with the wishes of His Majesty the King of Hawaii 237 yet feel that a sense of self-respect will not permit me to allow this unpleasant incident to terminate at the point at which it is left by letter of 13th April above referred to, and in order not to embarrass His Majesty, I have conceived it to be my duty to tender to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, at Honolulu, the resignation of my Consular functions, and this, with great regret, to sever a long and friendly official connexion with the Hawaiian Government.
I am unable to charge myself throughout the course of this affair with any want of duty or respect to His Excellency the Governor. I acquainted the Colonial Government with all the information I possessed, with regard to the movements of His Hawaiian Majesty, and with my own proposals for his reception, and I submit to your Lordship
