Before leaving the steamer I enquired of Dr Leitel, whether the language employed by him had been used by the authority of His Excellency the Governor. Dr Leitel replied that he had no instructions from the Governor to address me at all, and that his mission was to convey the King, whom he was instructed to follow to Government House, and that he was following something like his instructions. He added to the effect that he entertained personally every respect for me and had no desire to treat me otherwise than with courtesy.

On the following morning I made an official report of the foregoing circumstances to the Colonial Secretary, in a private communication which contains the following paragraph, to which I venture to direct your Lordship's attention.
