About dusk on the 12th April, the Thibet arrived in the harbour and came to an anchor about 10 p.m.

His Majesty and suite being on board, I at once went off in my launch, with my partner Mr. Francis Bulkeley,

After a formal introduction to the King, His Majesty at once expressed his desire to proceed to East Point in terms of the invitation which had reached him at Shanghai, and which had been accepted.

I thereupon informed His Majesty that, while it would afford me great satisfaction and pleasure to receive him, I was nevertheless bound by the invitation that had been sent. I had received an intimation from the Colonial Secretary to the effect that His Excellency the Governor had telegraphed to Shanghai, placing rooms in Government House at the disposal of His Majesty and suite, and offering him the hospitality of the Colony, but that unfortunately the message had not been sent until after His Majesty had departed.
