On the 6th of April I officially

Two days afterwards I addressed a semi-official note to Mr Francis, His Excellency's

Private Secretary, in the following terms.

8th April 1881

"My dear Mr Francis,

"As I promised you the other day,

I send a note to say that I have heard the King of Hawaii will leave Shanghai by the mail steamer "Thibet" tomorrow morning, and that I expect His Majesty will arrive here early on Tuesday.

"I have offered the King a house within the East Point grounds and His Majesty has accepted the offer. A separate establishment has been placed at his disposal.
