am not aware that the relations between the General and myself continue to be strained. On the contrary: since the decision of His Royal Highness the Commander-in-Chief about some questions that arose respecting the Queen's Birthday celebration in 1880, they have been both officially and personally, very friendly.
I should be glad if Your Lordship would point out to Mr. Childer's that the date of the letter of the Colonial Secretary, which is quoted as evidence of the strained relations, is 19th May, 1880, whereas in my despatch No. 63 of the 24th May, 1880, I asked Your Lordship to thank the Commander-in-Chief for the decision His Royal Highness had given on the 23rd May, 1880, and which as far as I was concerned was entirely satisfactory and terminated the small matter I had telegraphed about at the time as to a regimental band not being allowed to play at Government House on the Queen's Birthday.
