Mr. Deane invited my attention to the increase in the clerical work of his department consequent on the increase in the Police Force and other causes, and he pointed out to me that while the pay of the other junior members of the Force has been materially increased within the last ten years, the pay of the clerks has remained the same.

3. The salaries appropriated for the clerical staff of the department, under the Estimates for 1881, are as follows:

First Clerk $1,440.
Second Clerk $960.
Third Clerk $600
Fourth Clerk $360
Fifth Clerk $300

Having regard to the nature and amount of their work, and to the scale by which similar officers in the other departments are paid, I am of opinion that the Police Clerks should have their salaries increased, and I shall be glad if Your Lordship will give me your sanction to the following increased payment, namely:-
First Clerk, from $1440 to $1920 a year,
Second Clerk, from $960 to $1200 a year,
Third Clerk, from $600 to $960 a year,
Fourth Clerk, from $360 to $720 a year,
Fifth Clerk, from $300 to $480 a year.
