of either Bowrington or Lap Sap Wan the place for the future prison. A gaol for the future would enable the whole of the present Victoria Gaol to be sold off. In the opinion of Mr. Townsend, the selection of Stone Cutters' Island would have necessitated the retention of a large portion of the present gaol in Victoria for prisoners on remand, short sentence, and security prisoners, females and debtors, but conforming to the Secretary of State's views and assuming that a gaol on this side of the water will obviate the retention of any portion of the present gaol, and that the sale of the premises will realize $80,000.

The net cost of the new establishment at Lap Sap Wan or Bowrington will be reduced by this amount.
