It has since occurred to me that Mr Stewart, Assistant of his knowledge

of the Chinese language and of the high estimation in which he is held in the Colony generally, would be well fitted for this appointment and I therefore request you to offer it to him at the salary which previous office holders of the ... enjoyed.

4. I have had much pleasure in noting the high terms in which you have spoken of Mr Stewart & feel sure that he will retain your confidence in the capacity of Registrar General.
