I should apply for leave of absence with a view to retirement, and promised to assist me in obtaining it. I immediately accepted his proposal and applied personally to His Excellency to withdraw my letter above referred to, with the intention of withdrawing it, if the arrangement could be carried out. Afterwards, I wrote to and obtained replies from the five acting deputy Inspectors for the purpose of carrying out the inspection of the Chief Justice.
It was only when I did so that the Chief Justice discovered that I contemplated something that would create a bad precedent, and that I forwarded the two copies of the letter which were necessary for compliance with the Official rule. I now most earnestly pray to His Excellency to accord me the expiry I have acted for, and I shall then be prepared to meet any countercharge the Chief Justice may think proper to prefer against me.
